Later this month, the Australian CRPG Broken Roads, inspired by Fallout 2, will be released. To offer players a glimpse of what’s in store in this post-apocalyptic outback setting, the developer, Drop Bear Bytes, is releasing videos that delve into the game’s four character origins, starting with the hired gun.
Broken Roads is a captivating RPG developed in Australia, where you must navigate the challenges of surviving in the Australian outback, drawing inspiration from the Fallout 2 series.
The Australian outback is already a challenging environment, but when you add an apocalypse to the mix, things become even more difficult. However, it’s not all bleak; the game also incorporates humor reminiscent of the Fallout series. Instead of magical potions, you’ll find yourself enjoying a nice cold beer.
The game offers a non-linear narrative, allowing players to approach situations in various ways, and with the game’s release only two weeks away, Drop Bear Bytes is gradually revealing the game’s four origin stories.
The initial video, focusing on the ‘hired gun,’ portrays a grim upbringing where survival depended on the ability to use firearms. The voice-over explains, “Starvation is a powerful motivator, and you wouldn’t soon forget that feeling.” The hired gun eventually flees to the outback to become, well, a hired gun. The logic behind this decision may be puzzling, but that’s the path they chose.
Their experience, including their involvement with the Bally-Bally Hall scouts, toughens them up even more, with one character recounting a situation where showing kindness almost cost them their life. It seems that warm and fuzzy moments will be in short supply in Broken Roads.
The game openly acknowledges its inspiration, with its game director stating, “We are unapologetically drawing from Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment, Pillars 2, Baldur’s Gate 2.”
If you were disappointed when Fallout 3 shifted to real-time combat, this turn-based RPG might be just what you’re looking for when it arrives on Tuesday, November 14. The remaining three origin videos are expected to be released before the game’s launch.
