No, Silent Hill 2 Won’t Have a Pyramid Head Origin Level

If you’ve come across discussions about a potential Pyramid Head origin level being included in Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake and had concerns about what this might mean for the direction of the Konami game, there’s no need to worry. It appears that this speculation is based on a misinterpretation of a store listing and an old quote.

To bring you up to date, there has been some controversy surrounding the Best Buy listing for the Silent Hill 2 remake. The listing mentioned Pyramid Head, the iconic antagonist from the original game, and seemed to suggest the addition of a new ‘playable origin’ for this character in the horror game.

The quote from the listing stated: “Fan-favorite character, Pyramid Head, makes a return along with a special origin story for fans to play through.” The phrasing of this sentence may lead one to believe that there is a unique playable origin story for Pyramid Head being incorporated into Silent Hill 2, a character whose backstory was already thoroughly explored in the original game.

Speculation and discussions within the gaming community have been rampant since this listing gained attention. People were uncertain if this meant a new Pyramid Head origin story or if it was an awkward description of the Born From a Wish side story in the original SH2.

However, it appears to be neither of these scenarios. The Best Buy listing seems to have reworded a quote from concept artist Masahiro Ito, which was originally released when the Silent Hill 2 remake was announced in October 2022.

Masahiro Ito stated, “Pyramid Head is coming back. A new journey for those who know the original, and his origin story for those who know that character. And… the most memorable journey of the man most closely associated with that monster.”

Here, Ito is referring to how Pyramid Head is an iconic horror character and how the original Silent Hill 2, as well as the remake, delve into his origins and his connections to the main character, James Sunderland.

While the Best Buy listing may have raised concerns, it seems to have misinterpreted Ito’s words and presented them in a somewhat confusing manner. There is likely no intention to introduce a playable Pyramid Head origin story that undermines the character’s role in the narrative.

I’ve reached out to Konami to be sure, but I don’t think we need to start raising the pitchforks and torches just yet. In fact, developer Bloober Team’s CMO Anna Jasińska has already said the team wants to remain faithful to the original Konami sequel (via DreadXP).

“Longtime fans shouldn’t worry about us ‘missing the point’ while we’re livening up the title. We faithfully stick to the traditional story canon while remaking the gameplay and updating the graphics from the ground up.”

With the dreadful Silent Hill Ascension debut not far in the rear-view mirror, I can see we’re concerned, but I’d just wait for Silent Hill 2 to come out.

While you wait for the remake we’ve put together a breakdown of the Silent Hill 2 system requirements, alongside some of the most exciting upcoming games to be released in the near future.
