Broken Roads, the New Fallout-Style CRPG Game, Has Just Been Delayed

Fallout 5 remains on the distant horizon, and with Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 taking the spotlight, the return of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic RPG seems years away. In the interim, Broken Roads appears as a fitting alternative, blending the isometric wasteland exploration of Fallout 2, the character-driven drama reminiscent of Disco Elysium, Frostpunk’s survival mechanics, and the Mad Max aesthetic. Unfortunately, the developer, Drop Bear Bytes, has confirmed a delay for the highly anticipated CRPG.

Broken Roads places players in the role of survivors navigating the Australian outback in the aftermath of the apocalypse. As a classic Fallout-style RPG, especially resembling Fallout 2, players must manage resources, confront challenging decisions, and ensure the survival of the group within a vast, decision-driven narrative. While waiting for Fallout 5, Broken Roads seemed poised for a November release, but that is no longer the case.

Initially scheduled for release on Thursday, November 16, Drop Bear Bytes now states that additional time is needed to refine the game before launch.

“Since 2019, the Drop Bear Bytes team has been pouring their hearts and souls into Broken Roads, spending countless hours designing, troubleshooting, and adjusting to player feedback,” explains the developer. “While Broken Roads is still coming, we’ve made the decision to delay the release to allow for additional polish time and QA manpower, plus resources to allow for a higher quality bar for the thousands of permutations that can arise.”

Despite confirming that Broken Roads is “content complete,” the delay is necessary for thorough testing, tweaking, and polishing of the survival game. The developer emphasizes the extended length and size of the game, featuring approximately 30 hours of gameplay and nearly 400,000 words of dialogue.

“While the game is now content complete, it is also coming in longer than we originally anticipated, at around 30 hours of gameplay and nearly 400,000 words of dialogue,” states the developer. “As you can imagine, it’s extremely time-consuming to properly test all of these.”

The new release date for Broken Roads is set for “early next year,” likely within the first few months of 2024. Drop Bear Bytes assures players that this delay aims to deliver the “highest quality product.” The wait is not extensive, and the anticipated classic-style RPG with a strong Fallout influence is expected to be well worth it.

In the meantime, players can explore other games similar to Fallout. For those intrigued by Broken Roads’ branching narrative, there are several compelling story games available on PC.
