It’s been a little over a year since the reveal of Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, an upcoming real-time strategy game set in George R. R. Martin’s popular fantasy world. We were only treated to a cinematic reveal trailer at the time, but a new video that debuted during Gamescom Opening Night Live provides the first look at gameplay.
War for Westeros sees players commanding warring factions and familiar faces from Game of Thrones. Players can control characters including Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Jamie Lannister, Robb Stark, Tywin Lannister, and even the Night King, who bear the actor likenesses from the HBO series. As a commander of one of four factions – House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, or the White Walkers – you can utilize the unique abilities of the main characters on the battlefield to bolster your armies and claim the Iron Throne.
According to a press release, each faction offers “asymmetric strategies, with unique armies, buildings, mechanics, and playstyles shaped by their identity in the Game of Thrones series.” Victory involves training units, gathering resources, building structures, and claiming territory from enemies. Armies consist of infantry, cavalry, siege engines, and more fantastical forces such as giants and dragons. You can play the campaign solo or battle friends in online multiplayer matches.
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros will launch in early 2027 (after being delayed from its previous 2026 window) for PC via Steam.
