Doom endures eternally. Starting with the superb reboot released by Bethesda and continuing with Doom Eternal, which many consider the finest first-person shooter ever created, it has firmly established itself as a timeless classic on PC. However, within the series, there has always been one installment that has consistently divided even the most devoted Doom enthusiasts. Doom 3, released in 2004, departs from the fast-paced, kill-focused style of its predecessors in favor of a slower, more horror-driven approach. While it remains an excellent game, envision a complete remake of Doom 3 aimed at addressing some of its shortcomings and amplifying its standout moments. Enter Retchid, a fresh Steam shooter that feels like an entirely new Doom title and a comprehensive reimagining of the original Doom 3.
Created by From Beneath Software, Retchid seems like it was plucked from the same era as Doom 3, FEAR, and Quake 4. In this game, you assume the role of an engineer working for the enigmatic corporation TEC (that’s TEC, not UAC, with a knowing wink) and find yourself embroiled in a demonic incursion on one of Saturn’s moons (yes, Saturn, not Mars). The game offers an abundance of weapons, lumbering zombies, and impeccably crafted monsters, resulting in a deliberately-paced yet consistently action-packed first-person shooter reminiscent of classic boomer shooters. This is Doom 3, but improved.
Even from a visual perspective, Retchid evokes the aesthetics of ’00s shooters admirably. From Beneath Software has done a commendable job in capturing the distinctive elements of id Tech 4 and LithTech—those robust metal panels, intricate textures, and subtle dynamic lighting. Featuring 20 levels divided into three episodes (a structure familiar to sci-fi FPS enthusiasts—where have we heard that before?), Retchid also allows you to upgrade your suit in a manner reminiscent of Dead Space. And, of course, it boasts an exceptional shotgun.
If you’re eager to experience Retchid, it’s currently available in Steam Early Access. Recent reviews have awarded it a ‘very positive’ rating. So, if you’ve conquered Doom Eternal and are seeking an alternative take on Doom 3, Retchid is a must-play.
