Metal Gear Solid 4 Might Finally Be Coming Back

Metal Gear Solid 4 may be making a comeback, possibly on the PC platform. Hideo Kojima’s iconic stealth series, rebooted as the MGS Master Collection Volume 1, immerses us back into the world of Solid Snake, Raiden, and MGS 2 and 3. Concealed within the first Master Collection, there are hints of a potential re-release not only for Metal Gear Solid 4 but also for MGS 5: The Phantom Pain and potentially MGS Peace Walker.

Playing Metal Gear Solid 4 has become quite challenging in recent times. Originally released in 2008, it has never been available on any platforms other than the PlayStation 3. If you’ve been hoping to play MGS 4 on Steam or any other PC storefront, you’ve been out of luck. The game serves as the conclusion to Solid Snake’s story, propelling the stealth genre years beyond MGS 2. In this chapter, our bandana-wearing hero endeavors to thwart the enigmatic Patriots and confronts his old nemesis, Revolver Ocelot. A closer look at the new MGS Master Collection Volume 1 strongly suggests the return of Metal Gear Solid 4.

Uncovered by an individual named ‘Timo653,’ several lines of code within the launcher for the Master Collection make reference to “MGS 4,” “MGS 5,” and “MGS PW.” These hints seem to indicate that the Master Collection is already prepared for future updates with additional games, hence its designation as ‘Volume 1.’

Timo explains, “While examining the scripts for the Metal Gear Solid 2 Master Collection Launcher, I stumbled upon multiple lines related to Peace Walker, 4, and 5. There is a function for locating the correct path to read assets for. They have listings for all the Volume 1 games, but also 4, 5, and Peace Walker, hinting that these might be part of the rumored Vol 2.”

Earlier this year, we reported on the official website for the Master Collection, which also contained references to MGS 4, 5, and Peace Walker in its source code. For those who have never had the opportunity to play it or haven’t done so since 2008, the prospect of Metal Gear Solid 4 on PC is a significant development. Now, it’s a waiting game to see what Konami has hidden beneath its metaphorical cardboard box.

PCGamesN has reached out to Konami and will provide updates to this story as more information or comments become available.

Now that the Master Collection is finally here and Kojima’s complex, conspiracy-laden narrative is once again in the gaming spotlight, you might want to explore some of the other exceptional narrative-driven games. Alternatively, you can check out the latest games currently available.
