The Walking Dead Destinies is Here, and It’s Not Looking Good

Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Dave the Diver, Diablo 4, Sea of Stars, Starfield, Resident Evil 4 Remake – 2023 has proven to be one of the most exciting years for PC gamers in recent memory. Despite notable successes, such as Lord of the Rings: Gollum and Skull Island: Rise of Kong, Redfall fell short of expectations and is now contending with these two titles for the unenviable position of 2023’s worst game. Now, a new contender, The Walking Dead: Destinies, has entered the scene.

Published by GameMill Entertainment, the same studio behind Skull Island: Rise of Kong, The Walking Dead: Destinies leverages the powerful Walking Dead license. However, early indicators suggest that it may not secure a place among the best zombie games.

The game’s premise is intriguing, challenging players to “Change the course of The Walking Dead history.” Guiding players through various segments of the AMC series, The Walking Dead: Destinies allows decisions that can either align with Rick Grimes’ choices in the show or alter the fate of him and others. Gameplay involves navigating Walkers, engaging in combat, and scavenging for resources. Unfortunately, the reality appears less impressive.

Scheduled for a Steam release on December 1, following its console release on November 17, The Walking Dead: Destinies has already garnered negative attention online, evident in videos showcasing numerous problems. The game, as depicted in a video by YouTuber ‘MKIceAndFire,’ is a passable but underwhelming third-person action-adventure game plagued by bugs, glitches, and subpar production values.

Cutscenes lack sophistication, with static shots and lackluster voiceovers, dialogue is stiff, animations appear awkward, and crucial team members are notably absent. Despite featuring 13 playable characters, including Rick, Shane, Michonne, Daryl, and Carol, key characters like Andrea and Amy are absent, even in stories where they played significant roles, such as Woodbury.

Reports on Reddit indicate issues with passing a critical boss fight, forcing players down an unintended path. MKIceAndFire highlighted, “I played this on PS5 first, but I got a game-breaking bug after a few hours, so I restarted the game on Xbox Series X.”

The video illustrates Hershel walking without his prosthetic leg and Merle wearing an eyepatch that mysteriously disappears and reappears. This disappointing situation contrasts with the success of Telltale’s The Walking Dead games and The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, a virtual reality game. While the potential for The Walking Dead to succeed in the gaming realm is evident, Destinies seems unlikely to achieve that, despite the release on Steam on December 1. The game is available for wishlisting, although initial responses may temper enthusiasm.
